A Sicilian peasant tells an American officer which way the German convoy has gone. The Americans marched toward the strategic hilltop town which the German had held determinedly at all costs as a delaying action until the main German forces could be evacuated from the island. The town controlled the main road to Messina, from which the German army was being ferried to the Italian mainland.
