The Music therapy

by Massimiliano Fanni Canelles

The music has always been considered an element that can influence our moods, emotions, mental and physical wellbeing. The involvement of music in the quality of life is undeniable. In primitive societies, was reflected in the rituals, such as hunting and initiation. In religion, the sound from the Tibetan bells and singing Gregorian graced the spirit of the faithful. Even today they are discussing whether the symphonies of Mozart can develop a greater understanding in the listener. According to the neurologist Robert Zatorre of McGill University in Montreal, the music is able to activate the pleasure centers of the human brain, the same sensitivity to other less abstract elements, such as food, drugs, sex.

In contrast to recent, the peculiarity of the music is, however, does not possess biological value, but to be able – just like a chemical – to interact with some neurological function of the human body. These activities are “physical” in music are well defined and identifiable, as noticeably affect the heart rate and muscle tone. The use of music as a means of nonverbal communication can also intervene in education, rehabilitation, and even therapeutic, in a variety of pathological conditions. Nervous, anxiety, depression, psychosomatic difficulties, such as headache, tiredness and muscles forms of asthma, can benefit from it. The French doctor Alfred Tomatis has studied the therapeutic effects of singingStudies have reported hearing the dynamics of body and mind, identifying the “ear” as the “primary organ of consciousness”. In childhood, most importantly, the music seems to play a significant role to stimulate brain development. It helps to develop the language and to coordinate their movements. According to a study by the University of Sheffield, learning to play an instrument can help a dyslexic child to overcome some of their disorder. Researchers at the University of Liverpool suggest that the language of music performed by young can make the adult brain more flexible and better to be able to adapt in a different situations, showing more resistance to stress and a more valuable professional. In the act of expressing their emotions, scientists have noticed that the brains of someone involved to the music activates additional neural networks, which affect some brain regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is also involved in the development of social emotions. At this point, we must ask whether the technological change that is happening in all fields, digitization (conversion to numbers) of images, documents and sounds, allowing more power to maintain strong organic sounds and music. If not, and it was proven scientifically, the analog system of reproduction could recapture a new importance. That must be why the Recording Industry Association of America announced that sales of vinyl records are growing? We cannot know, but the Capital Records and other record companies have reprinted on vinyl almost all of the register in their possession.
